  1. Bullet Youth Leadership Service-Project at the Barrington  Public Library

Twenty-two youths from Chess Without Borders Program were selected to be Youth Leaders at the Barrington Library for the 2008 school year. The children, ranging in age from 6 to 13 years old, teach chess to the public  once a month for 2 hours at the Barrington Public Library under the supervision of Grandmaster Yury Shulman, volunteer Dr Kiran Frey, and Librarian Brad Jones. Each month a selected youth leader hosts the session and presents on a world champion. This introduces the public to the history and magic of this ancient game.  Chess Without Borders combines chess education with service learning and philanthropy.

  1. Bullet Transforming Lives Through Chess

On Feb 7th 2009 Roslyn Road School in Barrington hosted a chess tournament with Chess Without Borders. 137 students competed in the tournament while teenager chess players volunteered as Assistant Tournament Directors. Simultaneously as the tournament was taking place chess families were participating in another remarkable achievement where they were able to raise $3650 through donations and food sales. This was made possible through donations of cash and food from members in the community, friends and businesses such as Bertacchi Builders, Aleyra Medispa, Checkmate Chess Supply, Wool Street Grill and Hough Street Chess Club.  The money raised will be used to transform the life of Meher, who lives in the Govindpuri slums in Delhi, India. Meher was severely burnt all over her body and as a result also lost the use of both her hands. A CUSD 220 alum, Nina Sethi contacted Chess Without Borders to see if something could be done for her. The entire chess community sprung into action and dedicated themselves to raising money so that she can live a life as close to normal as possible. The Plastic Surgeon in India heard the story of the chess community rallying around her and has been inspired to donate his services as well. The money will be used for her post-surgical care.
